New Year’s Resolutions – How to Succeed

According to the University of Scranton Journal of Clinical Psychology, here are the top 10 New Year’s Resolutions that will be made for 2014:

  1. Lose weight
  2. Get Organized
  3. Spend Less, Save More
  4. Enjoy Life to the Fullest
  5. Staying Fit and Healthy
  6. Learn Something Exciting
  7. Quit Smoking
  8. Help Others in Their Dreams
  9. Fall in Love
  10. Spend More Time with Family

If you look at the reasons people give for failing to stick to their New Year’s resolutions in the past, they will tell you that they weren’t motivated enough, they lacked willpower, they didn’t have the support they needed, and many more reasons for their failure.  What most people aren’t aware of is that they  invoke the Law of Reverse Effect.  This law states that the harder you try not to do something (e.g., not eat, not smoke, not think negatively, etc.) the more likely you will fail.  Fully consider this scenario:  You’re on a diet and you are avoiding sweets.  There is a large piece of your favorite cake in the refrigerator.  You tell yourself, “I’m not going eat that piece of cake.  I’m not going to eat it and I’m not going to think about eating it.  I’m not even going to think about thinking about eating that gorgeous, mouth-watering, delicious piece of cake.”  And, what happens next?  The thoughts seem to start whirling in your mind and take on centrifcal force, going faster and faster, around and around!  Suddenly, as if it is an uncontrolable action, you find yourself reaching for that favorite of cake and eating it.  Not just a bite.  The whole piece!

What does this prove?  Willpower doesn’t work.  And, the reason being that you have an internal conflict between your conscious mind and your unconscious mind.  You conscious mind wants to believe that you are strong and will give up the cake in return for a better looking body.  However, your unconscious mind still holds the belief that you are willing to give up a better looking body for the feelings you get when you eat sweets.  You know what I mean by that, don’t you?  The feelings of relaxation, comfort, maybe even peacefulness and happiness that you associate with sweet foods.

What I’ve shared here related to foods is the same for pretty much anything else; smoking, drugs, sex, lack of confidence and motivation, lack of success, lack of money, etc.  You see, we humans are driven by either pleasure or pain.  We make choices so that we can access pleasure or avoid pain.  The things that bring us pleasure or pain are determined by the things we believe about ourselves, who we are as a person, our identity.  If your identity is that you are “big boned”, that you are “fat and happy”, that you are a “smoker”, that you “don’t have any confidence”, that money “comes to everyone else but me”, then your behaviors will follow your beliefs, no matter how much you consciously declare you will change your behaviors and use willpower.  The unconscious always wins.  It’s your unconscious that creates all of your automated actions that cause you to remain in a habit, like reaching for a cigarette or food, spending money on things you know you shouldn’t, imagining people making fun of you, and so forth.  How does a person change the way their unconscious works?  Like a harddrive on a computer, can it be reprogrammed?  The answer is “Yes!”, through hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a proven and effective way to reach your New Year’s resolutions without any negative side effects!  No drugs or meetings to lose weight, stop alcohol abuse, or stop smoking!  No long, drawn-out coaching sessions or video libraries to become confident or motivated!  And, most people take just a session or two to achieve the outcome they want.  Hypnosis is quick, effective and what most people don’t realize is that hypnosis is used by main-stream psychologists, dentists, the military for medical reasons, and people like Tony Robbins and other self-improvement experts.  One last comment on hypnosis; some people say they have concerns about using hypnosis because they don’t want something controlling them.  What are addictions to tobacco, food, sex, alcohol, fears, and other behaviors that are outside of your conscious decisions if not something controlling you?  Why not make a decision to change the thoughts that control you to achieve the life you’ve always wanted?!
